Home Made Solar Generator Making one yourself .

A solar panel generator is a device for absorbing light and ultimately electricity from the suns rays. When light hits a solar panel it is converting into electric by photovoltaics. Photovolatics are what the solar cells are made of and this initial electricity is DC current.
By installing an inverter within the system you can convert this DC current in to AC, which is what your mains supply is running on. You then feed this supply into your mains via the fuse board.
Some people see residential solar power being used on houses and the big expensive retail kits and think that its beyond them. Well I’m here to tell you that anyone can do it. Also, it won’t cost 10K either.
You need to remember that solar panel prices from retailers are so high because this is relatively new technology. Once the market eventually gets flooded the price will come down.
All these photovoltaic solar systems have between 4 and 7 fundamental components in them. And all theses parts are inexpensive and easily available!
Here are the general steps and any "special" components that you can use to get your first DIY solar system up and running:
- Work out the load requirement – find out the wattage hours per day of the appliance(s) you are intending to run off this new system. e.g if you had 3 x 12w light bulbs being used for 4 hours each evening then these would equal 108 watt hours.
- Building your solar panel/s – The solar panel is the part of the generator which collects energy from the sun. - You will want to find a good 12v panel which generates the amount of power you require. It is possible to string together multiple panels in an array to achieve a higher voltage.
- A Charge Controller – When the battery bank is fully charged, the charge controller will interrupt the charging process. The charge controller sits between your solar panel and your battery. It moderates the amount of power put into the battery to deliver a more even charge. Some charge controllers will also save the batteries from being overcharged, which will lengthen your batteries life.
- Deep cycle battery/s – This is what will store all of the energy produced by your PV panels. Depending on how much power you are producing you may have to use multiple batteries. The battery or batteries required will have to be deep cycle, such as a marine battery. It's best to only drain your batteries to about 80% capacity before charging back up. This will keep the batteries alive for a longer time. The Battery size will depend on the daily wattage hours of the load and the number of days of storage capacity you require.
- Power Inverter – Converts the DC power from the battery to AC power, which is what your appliances run off in your home. You will most likely have to change the voltage type stored inside your battery from Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC). Most appliances and electronics in the USA run off 120v AC, but in other areas this may differ.
You can purchase the above components cheaply in internet or in a technical shop.
Here are the general steps to make a solar generator :
-
Put on the insulated gloves before you begin work. They will protect you from inadvertent contact with any live current.
-
Mount the DC meter and input to the top of the battery box using the drill.
-
Attach the DC meter to the wingnut terminals on the battery with the insulated wire. Make sure that you attach the negative pole first and do not touch more than one wire at a time.
-
Use the insulated wire to connect the DC input to the wingnut terminals on the battery. Again, connect the negative pole first and make sure you don't handle more than 1 wire.
-
Use the insulated wire to attach the solar panel solar panel to the wingnut terminals on the battery. As before, connect to the negative pole before the positive pole and touch only 1 wire at a time.
-
Close the lid on the battery box, and use electrical tape or similar material to keep it sealed.
-
Place the solar panel in the sun, and give the battery time to charge. You may want to mount the panel to a wall or pole, since it may take several hours.
-
Connect the AV inverter to the system. This will allow you to use ordinary household items such as radios and desk lamps with the generator.
It is not difficult to make one by yourself, you only need to know which steps take.
